Does the Premium DNS service support DNSSEC?

DNSSEC is not currently supported by the Premium DNS service, but we are planning to add support for it in the near future. Meanwhile, if DNSSEC is a hard requirement for you, please continue using our standard DNS service.

How can I enable the Premium DNS service for an existing domain using the Reseller Control Panel?

This process depends on whether you have enabled DNSSEC on your domain or not. The instructions below assume that you are currently using Openprovider’s standard DNS service for your domain, but it is similar if you are using a third party provider.

If DNSSEC is enabled on your domain:

  1. In the domain details view, select the edit option and disable DNSSEC in the ‘DNSSEC Settings’ section.
  2. Save your changes.
  3. Wait for 24-48 hours to ensure that the changes are propagated globally.
  4. Go back to the domain details view, edit the domain and check the ‘Premium DNS by Sectigo’ box. The Sectigo nameserver group will be selected automatically in the ‘Nameserver Settings’ section.
  5. Save your changes.

If DNSSEC is NOT enabled on your domain:

  1. In the domain details view, select the edit option and check the ‘Premium DNS by Sectigo’ box. The Sectigo nameserver group will be selected automatically in the ‘Nameserver Settings’ section.
  2. Save your changes.

Note that your standard DNS zone will not be deleted from the system after migrating to the Premium zone. The standard zone will be kept as a backup, and Openprovider will try to keep it in sync with your Premium zone.

Can I enable the Premium DNS service when transferring a domain to Openprovider or when trading a domain?

No, the Premium DNS service is not available in these cases just yet, but we are planning to add support for them in the near future. Once a domain has been successfully transferred to Openprovider, Premium DNS can be enabled via a domain update action.

Can I transfer my Premium DNS subscription from one domain to another?

No, the Premium DNS service is tied to a specific domain and cannot be transferred between domains.

How do I manage the Premium DNS service from the Reseller Control Panel?

You can manage your premium DNS zone in the same way you manage your standard DNS zones, i.e. from the domain details page or from the ‘DNS Management’ section.

Note, however, that the DNS Panel (dnspanel.io) is not available yet for the Premium DNS service.

How do I disable the Premium DNS service for a given domain using the Reseller Control Panel?

Please follow these steps:

  1. In the domain details view, select the edit option and change the nameservers to the ones that correspond to the DNS service you will be using after cancelling the Premium DNS service. If you wish to use Openprovider’s standard DNS service, just select the Openprovider nameserver group. If you plan on using a third party provider, please enter the corresponding nameservers. In this case, please ensure that the new DNS zone is available before performing the migration.
  2. Save your changes.
  3. Wait for 24-48 hours to ensure that the changes are propagated globally.
  4. Go back to the domain details view, edit the domain and uncheck the ‘Premium DNS by Sectigo’ box. Your Premium DNS zone will be deleted and your subscription cancelled.
  5. Save your changes.

What DNS record types are supported by the Premium DNS service?

The Premium DNS service supports the same record types as our standard DNS service. More information can be found here: https://support.openprovider.eu/hc/en-us/articles/216648808-DNS-Records.

The only exception is TLSA records, which are supported by our standard DNS service but not by the Premium DNS service. If you are currently using a TLSA record for one of your domains and wish to enable the Premium DNS service for that domain, please ensure you remove the TLSA record first or get in touch with our support team.

Can I use the Premium DNS service if my domain is not managed by Openprovider?

No, this use case is not supported yet.

Billing

How does billing work for the Premium DNS service?

The Premium DNS service is a yearly subscription service associated with a given domain. The service is independent from the lifecycle of said domain, and the one year billing cycle starts as soon as the service is enabled for it.

The subscription is automatically renewed every year, unless:

  • The service has been disabled for that domain.
  • The domain has been deleted and its quarantine period has ended.
  • The domain has been transferred out.
  • The domain has expired and its quarantine period has ended.

Refunds will not be given in any of those cases should these events happen before the end of the current billing cycle.

What happens to my subscription if I disable the Premium DNS service for a domain?

The Premium DNS service will be disabled right away for that domain. Your Premium DNS zone will be deleted right away, so please refer to the corresponding section in this FAQ for instructions on how to disable the service without any downtime.

If you cancel your subscription before the current billing cycle has come to an end, you will not get a refund for the rest of the 1-year period you paid for.

What happens to my subscription if I delete my domain, I transfer it out or my domain expires?

If you delete your domain or transfer it out of Openprovider, the Premium DNS service will be disabled right away for that domain, and the corresponding Premium DNS zone will be deleted.

If your domain expires, it will enter the quarantine state, where nameservers will be changed from Sectigo nameservers to:

  • ina1.registrar.eu
  • ina2.registrar.eu
  • Ina3.registrar.eu

During the quarantine state (soft or hard), your Premium DNS zone will still be kept alive, so if you restore your domain during this state, the Sectigo nameservers will be reassigned to the domain, your Premium DNS service will be fully restored and you won’t have to pay for a new zone.

However, once the quarantine period ends your Premium DNS zone will be deleted.

Note that if any of this happens before the current billing cycle has come to an end, you will not get a refund for the rest of the 1-year period you paid for.

API

Is the Openprovider API compatible with Premium DNS?

Yes, the Openprovider API is compatible with the Premium DNS service and can be used to manage your Premium DNS zones and records programmatically, just as you do with your standard DNS zones.

However, please note that the DNS Panel (dnspanel.io) is not supported yet for Premium DNS. Any calls to the generateSingleDomainTokenRequest API method will result in an error.

How can I enable the Premium DNS service when registering a new domain programmatically using the API?

Just add the ‘isSectigoDnsEnabled’ => 1 parameter to your createDomainRequest. PHP example:

$request = new OP_Request;

$request->setCommand('createDomainRequest')

    ->setAuth(array('username' => '***', 'password' => '***'))

    ->setArgs(array(

            'ownerHandle' => 'AB123456-NL',

            'adminHandle' => 'AB123456-NL',

            'techHandle' => 'AB123456-NL',

            'domain' => array(

                    'name' => 'example',

                    'extension' => 'tld'

            ),

            'period' => '1',

            'nameServers' => [

                    0 => ['name' => 'NS1.sectigoweb.com'],

                    1 => ['name' => 'NS2.sectigoweb.com'],

                    2 => ['name' => 'NS3.sectigoweb.com'],

                    3 => ['name' => 'NS4.sectigoweb.com'],

            ],

            'isSectigoDnsEnabled' => 1,

    ));

How can I enable the Premium DNS service for an existing domain programmatically using the API?

Add the ‘isSectigoDnsEnabled’ => 1 parameter to your modifyDomainRequest. PHP example:

$request = new OP_Request;

$request->setCommand('modifyDomainRequest')

    ->setAuth(array('username' => '***', 'password' => '***'))

    ->setArgs(array(

            'domain' => array(

                    'name' => 'example',

                    'extension' => 'tld'

            ),

            'isSectigoDnsEnabled' => 1,

    ));

How can I disable the Premium DNS service for one of my domains programmatically using the API?

Add the ‘isSectigoDnsEnabled’ => 0 parameter to your modifyDomainRequest. PHP example:

$request = new OP_Request;

$request->setCommand('modifyDomainRequest')

    ->setAuth(array('username' => '***', 'password' => '***'))

    ->setArgs(array(

            'domain' => array(

                    'name' => 'example',

                    'extension' => 'tld'

            ),

            'isSectigoDnsEnabled' => 0,

    ));

Please note that the 'isSectigoDnsEnabled' parameter must only be used to enable or disable the Premium DNS service. It must be omitted from the API calls with which you don’t intend to toggle the Premium DNS service.

Can the Premium DNS service also be used via Plugins, like WHMCS, Blesta or Hostbill?

The Premium DNS service is currently not supported by these plugins, although support for WHMCS is currently in the works. We will notify you as soon as it becomes available.
