Internal and external transfers and authorization codes

Internal Transfers

An internal transfer occurs within Openprovider, moving a domain between two reseller accounts. This process is typically faster and simpler because the domain remains with the same provider, and the transfer is handled internally.

In the case of an internal transfer, a notification is shown during the transfer process stating "Internal Transfer".

This means that the domain is already registered with Openprovider but with another reseller. For internal domain transfers, expiration dates will remain the same after successful transfer completion.

External Transfers

An external transfer involves moving a domain from one registrar or provider to another. This process  may take several days, as it involves communication between different organizations. External transfers are more complex but allow you to switch to a new registrar or provider.

For domains registered with Openprovider, you can get authorization codes/EPP codes for internal and external transfers from Authorization code management page in control panel (RCP).

Requesting an authorization code for an internal transfer

It might sound like you would need an "internal transfer code" for all internal transfers, but this is not the case. In most cases, an internal transfer can be done via a "regular" external transfer code.
It depends on the TLD and the registry transfer policy, if a "regular" transfer code can be used, or if a "special" internal transfer code must be used.

Some examples:

.NL internal transfer:

For .nl domains you will only see the option to "Retrieve authorization code" or "Reset authorization code" , nothing is mentioned about internal or external transfers. So in this case, the code can be used for both internal transfers to a different Openprovider reseller as external transfers to a different Registrar.

.BE internal transfer

For .be domains, you will see the option to generate an external or internal transfer code. This is due to the transfer code policy of the Belgium Registry. An external transfer code can also be used for an internal transfer.

In case the domain needs to be transferred to a different Openprovider Reseller account, either internal transfer or external transfer code can be used. However, please note that internal transfer code cannot be used for a transfer to a different registrar/provider!
